New or Lost Passport in Cambodia: Protect Your Immigration Record

A passport renewal, a damaged passport, and a lost or stolen passport are different events. Public Cambodian sources do not provide a complete English procedure for transferring or replacing every immigration endorsement. The safe approach is to preserve the old document when possible, record what was lost, contact the passport authority, and obtain case-specific instructions from Cambodia's General Department of Immigration before travelling.

Separate Renewal From Loss

A planned renewal leaves time to copy the current passport, check the immigration endorsement, and ask the issuing authority how the old book will be returned. A loss or theft removes the document unexpectedly and may require a police report and emergency help from the passport holder's embassy. The same checklist should not be presented as a guaranteed process for both situations.

Record The Current Status Before Renewal

Before sending a passport for renewal, make clear copies of the identity page, Cambodian visa or extension, entry stamp, and any other relevant endorsement. Record the passport number and the expiry date shown on the Cambodian status. Keep those copies outside the passport itself. They do not replace the original document, but they give the embassy and GDI a reliable starting point if a question arises.

Ask For The Old Passport To Be Returned

Passport authorities have different cancellation procedures. Some return the old book automatically, while others may retain it or require a request. Tell the issuing authority that the passport contains a current Cambodian immigration endorsement and ask whether the cancelled book can be returned. Do this before the document enters the renewal process, when options are easier to clarify.

Do Not Assume The Endorsement Transfers

The fact that an immigration endorsement appears in an old passport does not prove that it transfers automatically to a new one, nor does it prove that carrying both documents will be accepted in every circumstance. Public GDI material available in English does not set out a universal transfer rule. Ask GDI what documents to carry, whether any annotation or replacement is needed, and how the status will be treated at departure and re-entry.

If The Passport Is Lost Or Stolen

Report the loss through the channel required by the local police and contact the passport holder's embassy or consulate for replacement-document instructions. Then contact GDI promptly. A police report establishes that the document was reported missing; an emergency travel document establishes identity for the purpose stated by the issuing authority. Neither document, by itself, recreates a Cambodian visa or extension.

Avoid Unsourced Fee And Deadline Promises

Commercial guides often quote an exit-visa fee, a seven-day validity period, or a fixed rule that every existing extension is cancelled after loss. We could not verify those precise outcomes in a current, public GDI source. They may reflect practice in some cases, but they should not be presented as guaranteed rules. GDI should confirm the current option, fee, documents, and timing for the individual case.

Do Not Travel Until The Status Is Clear

Replacing the passport is only one part of the problem. Before booking or attempting departure, confirm which documents GDI expects to see and whether any Cambodian permission must be issued first. Airline staff, border officers, an embassy, and GDI perform different roles. Advice from one does not necessarily answer what another authority requires.

Keep Identity Details Consistent

Check the spelling of the name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and any change to personal details across the police report, embassy paperwork, replacement passport, and immigration application. A transliteration difference or missing former passport number can slow down a case because the records no longer match cleanly. Where a name has legally changed, carry the official evidence supporting that change.

Protect The Digital Record Too

If an e-Visa or online arrival submission was used, retain the certificate, confirmation email, application reference, and payment record. Use only official government portals when checking an application. Do not send full passport scans through public social-media messages or to an intermediary whose identity and role have not been verified.

Plan For Time Without Inventing A Timeline

Police reporting, embassy replacement, and immigration review can each take time. No general article can promise a completion date because embassy capacity, document type, holidays, and the facts of the loss differ. Start each step promptly, keep dated evidence of contact, and avoid allowing another immigration deadline to pass while waiting for an answer from only one office.

Getting It Right

For a renewal, preserve the record and ask both the passport authority and GDI how the old and new documents should be handled. For a loss or theft, report it, obtain replacement-document instructions, and ask GDI to determine the immigration consequence. We can help organise the evidence and questions, but the competent authorities must decide the status, fee, and next step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I simply carry my old and new passports in Cambodia?

Do not assume that is sufficient for every case. Ask GDI whether the existing endorsement can be used with both documents or whether another step is required before travel.

What should I do before renewing my passport?

Copy the identity page and Cambodian endorsements, record the relevant dates, tell the passport authority that the old book contains a current immigration record, and ask GDI how the documents should be handled.

What happens to my status if my passport is lost or stolen?

The public English material does not establish one guaranteed outcome. Report the loss, contact the embassy or consulate, and obtain current instructions from GDI before relying on a fee, deadline, transfer, cancellation, or exit process quoted elsewhere.
